Nepal Earthquake
On 25 April 2015, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal and caused extensive damage. Over 100 aftershocks of different magnitudes have been recorded. More than 8,400 deaths and 18,000 injuries found. It was estimated that 8.1 million people were affected and made homeless. They are in desperate needs for safe drinking water, food, medical service, sanitation facilities, temporary shelters and fuels, etc. The approaching rainy season in Nepal is expected to cause more problems in the affected regions.
It was resolved to donate HK$100,000 via the HKMA Charitable Foundation (Foundation) to Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) to support their relief efforts in Nepal, which include deployment of Disaster Response Team, medical volunteers and procurement of relief materials, providing aids for over 22,000 households.
On 20 May 2015, Dr. SHIH Tai Cho, President of the HKMA, Dr. CHOW Pak Chin, Chairman of the Foundation and Dr. Alvin Y.S. CHAN, Vice-President of the HKMA presented the big cheque to Ms. Bonnie SO, Secretary General of HKRC.
